Press Release
(Frederiksted, St. Croix, USVI) – The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts -- in Frederiksted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts (CMCArts) is excited to announce, "You: the Promise of the Diaspora a Theatre & Arts Workshop for Teens.” This powerful workshop will be led by contemporary artist and oral historian Chloé Duplessis and performance artist and educator Sayeeda Carter. Duplessis will be our artist-in-residence at the museum while collaborating with Carter who lives on St. Croix. This innovative 5-week workshop will begin on January 11, 2022 and will support students ages 12–18 in their personal and artistic journey. Twenty students will gather 3 days a week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons to receive instruction in the visual and performing arts at the museum.
Students will gain an understanding of world history and culture through the lens of the African diaspora; and build essential skills in creative thinking, conflict resolution and artistic expression. Additionally, students will learn how to compose digital art images with Dulessis; and learn foundational principles of performance and presentation while working with Carter.
"You: the Promise of the Diaspora” exhibition will open on February 12, 2022 at CMCArts with students performing in the courtyard as part of the opening event. Following the performance, guests will have the opportunity to view the student's photography and collage work in the main upstairs gallery. The show will be open to the public until February 26, 2022.
